We Made It! Reflecting on Winter at Our Centre

Well, we did it.

Winter is (almost) behind us.

The days are getting longer, the mornings are becoming a little less frosty, and there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel that isn’t just another child arriving with “a bit of a sniffle.”

As we look ahead to spring, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the winter season we’ve just navigated together.

Because if there’s one thing winter in childcare teaches you, it’s that raising and caring for children truly takes a village.

Winter Was… Winter

Let’s be honest.

Winter in childcare is never exactly quiet.

It’s the season of tissues, handwashing, extra cleaning, symptom checks, and trying to determine whether a cough is “just a cough” or the beginning of something that will work its way through half the community.

It’s the season where educators become highly skilled at identifying the sound of a sneeze from remarkable distances.

It’s the season where every surface gets cleaned approximately 47 times a day.

And it’s the season where coffee somehow becomes an essential workplace resource.

Yet despite all the challenges that winter can bring, this year felt different in the best possible way.

Not because there were no illnesses.

Let’s not get carried away.

There were definitely illnesses.

But because our families and educators worked together to navigate them.

A Huge Thank You to Our Families

One of the things that stood out most this winter was the partnership we shared with our families.

Throughout the season, families communicated openly, kept us informed when illnesses were circulating at home, and made the incredibly difficult decision to keep children home when they weren’t well enough to attend.

We know that isn’t always easy.

Keeping a child home can mean rearranging work schedules, calling in favours from grandparents, juggling commitments, or trying to work while simultaneously caring for a child who has decided that being sick should not interfere with their ability to climb the furniture.

We genuinely appreciate every effort our families made.

Those decisions helped us support not only individual children, but our entire centre community.

The Behind-the-Scenes Winter Effort

While children continued learning, exploring, playing and having fun, our team was hard at work behind the scenes.

Winter often means:

• Increased cleaning and sanitising

• Extra monitoring of children’s wellbeing

• More communication with families

• Additional staffing challenges

• More roster adjustments than we’d care to count

• An extraordinary amount of hand soap

There were mornings where the roster changed before breakfast.

There were days where we wondered if tissues should have their own budget category.

There were moments when our laundry worked harder than some industrial facilities.

But our team showed up every day with professionalism, flexibility and care.

And for that, we couldn’t be more grateful.

To Our Amazing Educators

Winter asks a lot of educators.

They comfort children who aren’t feeling their best.

They support worried families.

They maintain hygiene practices.

They continue creating engaging learning experiences.

And they somehow manage to do all of this while being regularly sneezed on by people who are approximately one metre tall.

The dedication shown by our educators throughout winter was nothing short of incredible.

Their commitment to children’s wellbeing, learning and happiness is what keeps our centre running smoothly, even during the busiest illness season.

What We Learned

Every winter teaches us something.

This year reinforced something we’ve always known:

Strong relationships matter.

When families and educators communicate openly, trust each other and work together, challenges become easier to navigate.

Illnesses don’t disappear.

Winter still does what winter does.

But a supportive community makes all the difference.

We are incredibly proud of the way our centre community approached this season with understanding, patience and teamwork.

And Now… Spring

While we’re proud of how winter unfolded, we have to admit we’re looking forward to what’s next.

Spring means:

• More sunshine

• More outdoor adventures

• More gardening experiences

• More nature exploration

• More opportunities for learning outdoors

• Fewer tissues (hopefully)

The playground will become greener.

The flowers will begin to bloom.

The children will spend even more time exploring the natural world around them.

And all of us will enjoy a little extra warmth.

Although, if experience has taught us anything, at least one child will still insist on wearing shorts on a 15-degree morning.

Looking Ahead

As we move into spring and the warmer months ahead, we want to thank every family who partnered with us throughout winter.

Thank you for your communication.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you for your understanding.

And thank you for helping us create a centre community that genuinely works together.

Winter may have tested us at times, but it also reminded us how fortunate we are to have such wonderful families and educators working alongside one another.

So here’s to spring.

To sunshine.

To fresh air.

To outdoor adventures.

And, with any luck, to buying tissues in slightly smaller quantities.
