While families are busy stocking up on tissues and children’s cold medicine, childcare directors across Australia are participating in what can only be described as an Olympic-level event called:

“How Do I Keep This Centre Running Today?”

Because winter in childcare isn’t just about runny noses.

It’s about staffing.

Ratios.

Cleaning.

Illness outbreaks.

Staff wellbeing.

And receiving phone calls before your first coffee.

Lots and lots of phone calls.

The 5:30am Phone Call

Every director knows this sound.

Your phone rings.

You look at the clock.

It’s early.

Too early.

Nobody calls a childcare director before sunrise to say, “Good morning, just wanted to tell you what a lovely day it is.”

No.

It’s winter.

You already know what’s coming.

“Hi, I’m really sorry, but I’ve been up all night sick…”

It is not.

Nobody knows why.

So while the usual cleaning routines continue, winter introduces a whole new level of sanitising.

Door handles.

Sleep mats.

Bathroom surfaces.

Resources.

Furniture.

Things you didn’t even realise children could reach.

If there were an Olympic sport for disinfecting surfaces, early childhood educators would dominate the podium.

The Budget vs Reality Conversation

Winter can also be surprisingly expensive.

Additional cleaning supplies.

More tissues than should ever be legally required.

Extra casual staffing.

Replacement resources.

Additional laundry.

Hand soap seemingly evaporating at record speeds.

Every director starts winter with a budget.

Winter then laughs at that budget.

The Ratio Anxiety

Families may not realise that when staff are absent, directors don’t simply replace a shift.

They must ensure every room remains compliant with educator-to-child ratios at all times.

This means every illness can trigger a domino effect across the entire service.

One educator away might mean:

• Rearranging breaks

• Moving educators between rooms

• Calling casuals

• Adjusting rosters

• Reviewing bookings

• Recalculating ratios

Repeatedly.

Usually before breakfast.

Sometimes before coffee.

Families often see a smooth drop-off and pick-up experience.

Behind the scenes, however, there may have been seventeen roster changes, twelve phone calls, three emergency cleaning sessions and one director questioning every life choice that led them to childcare management.

Yet the children never know.

And that’s the goal.
