As the cooler months arrive, so do the coughs, colds, runny noses and other seasonal illnesses that seem to make their way through every household. While some winter bugs are unavoidable, there are plenty of simple steps families can take to help keep children healthy and reduce the spread of illness throughout our centre.
Why Winter Brings More Sickness
During winter, we tend to spend more time indoors, giving germs more opportunities to spread from person to person. Young children are also still developing their immune systems, meaning they may catch illnesses more frequently than adults.
The good news is that healthy habits can make a big difference.
Winter Wellness Tips for Families
1. Encourage Regular Hand Washing
One of the most effective ways to stop germs from spreading is through proper hand washing. Encourage children to wash their hands before eating, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and when arriving home from outings.
2. Prioritise Sleep
A well-rested child is better equipped to fight off illness. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can help support their immune system and overall wellbeing.
3. Eat Nourishing Foods
Offering a variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains helps provide the nutrients children need to stay healthy throughout winter.
4. Stay Active
Even on cooler days, fresh air and physical activity are important for children’s health and wellbeing. Rug up and enjoy outdoor play whenever possible.
5. Teach Good Cough and Sneeze Etiquette
Encourage children to cough or sneeze into their elbow rather than their hands and to wash their hands afterwards.
6. Keep Up with Flu Vaccinations
Annual flu vaccinations can help protect children and reduce the severity of illness if they do become unwell.
When Should Children Stay Home?
We understand that balancing work and family commitments can be challenging, but keeping unwell children at home is one of the most important ways we can protect our centre community.
If your child is experiencing symptoms such as:
Fever
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Persistent coughing
Significant lethargy or discomfort
Contagious illnesses
Symptoms that prevent them from comfortably participating in daily activities
they should remain at home until they have recovered and meet any required exclusion periods.
A child who is too unwell to participate in the day is generally too unwell to attend care.
Working Together
Our educators work hard to maintain a clean, hygienic environment through regular cleaning, sanitising, hand hygiene practices and promoting healthy habits with children. However, preventing the spread of illness is a team effort.
By keeping sick children at home, practising good hygiene and supporting healthy routines, we can work together to keep our children, families and educators as healthy as possible this winter.
Thank you for helping us create a safe and healthy environment for everyone in our care.
